Dentists, Languages and Easter Parades

April at Greystanes Preschool was the kind of month that's hard to summarise without underselling it. The children learned to brush their teeth properly from an actual dentist. They started picking up words in Tamil and Urdu. They paraded handmade Easter hats in front of cheering families. And somewhere in between all of that, they were building their foundations in letters and numbers. It was full, it was joyful, and it's worth taking a moment to look back at everything that happened.

A Visit from the Dentist

There are some lessons that land differently when they come from the real thing, and oral health is one of them. This month, Greystanes Preschool welcomed a dentist into the classroom, giving children the chance to learn directly about why dental hygiene matters and how to do it properly.

The children discovered how often they should brush, the techniques that actually work, and why taking care of teeth from a young age sets them up for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Incursions like this are valuable precisely because they connect classroom learning to the real world in a way that sticks. The enthusiasm for brushing that followed is proof enough that it worked.

Learning New Languages: Tamil and Urdu

One of the most impressive things happening at Greystanes this month has been the "chit chat" language sessions, where children have been learning to speak words and phrases in Tamil and Urdu. The sessions have been a genuine hit, with children showing growing confidence and enthusiasm as the weeks have progressed.

Introducing children to multiple languages in early childhood is one of the most research-backed things an early learning centre can do. Young children's brains are uniquely receptive to language acquisition, and exposure to different languages at this age builds cognitive flexibility, cultural awareness and communication skills that benefit them well into adulthood. The fact that it's also a lot of fun is a bonus.

The Easter Hat Parade

The annual Easter Hat Parade is one of those events that brings the whole Greystanes community together, and this year's was no exception. Families came along to watch and cheer as children proudly paraded their handmade hats and showcased the artwork they'd been working on. The creativity on display was genuinely impressive, and the pride on the children's faces as they walked was unmistakeable.

Events like this matter beyond the obvious joy of the day itself. When children create something, share it publicly and receive recognition for it, they build confidence and a sense of identity as capable, creative learners. It's one of the quieter but more important things that a great preschool does.

Letters, Numbers and Building Strong Foundations

Running alongside all the celebrations and special events was the steady, daily work of early literacy and numeracy. Throughout April, children have been focusing on letters and numbers, building the foundational skills they'll draw on as they move into formal schooling.

This kind of foundational work is most effective when it's woven into a programme that also includes rich experiences like visiting dentists, learning new languages and creating art for public parades. Children who are engaged, confident and curious approach literacy and numeracy tasks with the same energy they bring to everything else.

What's Coming Up: Mother's Day Celebrations

The children are already busy preparing their Mother's Day presents, and the excitement is palpable. Greystanes Preschool will be hosting a Mother's Day event on 7th May at 2:30pm, and invitations will be going out to families shortly. It's shaping up to be a lovely afternoon.
